Huggins and Scott’s First Auction of 2016 Set to Begin February 1st
Huggins and Scott’s first of four Masterpiece Auctions of 2016 will open for bidding on Monday February 1st and close on Thursday night February 11th with the 30-minute rule beginning at 11:00pm ET.
A terrific assortment is offered with tremendous investment-quality pieces from all sports and the historical and political worlds. Several unique lots headline this auction. We open the auction with one of our most extraordinary pieces we’ve ever offered. This is THE ACTUAL football Johnny Unitas used to throw a touchdown pass to Raymond Berry in the 1958 NFL Championship Game, dubbed “The Greatest Game Ever Played.” Incredible provenance detailing the remarkable chain of ownership is also included.
Vintage baseball card collectors will enjoy an abundance of pre-and-post war rarities including professionally graded and raw examples of cards from a variety of designations, including Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Christy Mathewson, Cy Young, Shoeless Joe Jackson and more; a number of graded and ungraded tobacco and candy cards offered as singles and in lots, and much more. Highlights include: a tremendous T205 Gold Border Near Set break (193 different) each card PSA Graded; a newly found M101-5 near set including a SGC 60 Joe Jackson; a seldom-offered W600 Honus Wagner (SGC 30); a new find of 1912 Underwood & Underwood real photo postcards with Christy Mathewson; a rare E223 1888 G&B Chewing Gum card of Con Daily; several rare backs and tough T206 White Borders, including a Hal Chase with a Red Hindu back; nearly a dozen different 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth cards of all different conditions; and many more.
The post-war collection is substantial as well with a large number of singles, lots, complete and near sets from 1948 to present. Highlights include: a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 PSA 3; a 1952 Topps Frank Campos “black star on back” PSA 7 (Only known PSA 7); 1951 Bowman Willie Mays PSA 5.5; a beautiful 1963 Topps Pete Rose rookie PSA 8; literally hundreds of complete and near sets including a 1953 Bowman Color Baseball set (#21 on PSA Registry); an incredible 1982 Topps Baseball Traded Set Unopened Case of 100 Sets; two remarkable 1960 Topps baseball unopened rack packs from a new find, and much more. As always, we also present a plethora of wonderful “shoebox” collections (always a crowd favorite).
This auction has a large number of baseball autographed items highlighted by an incredible Christy Mathewson single-signed baseball, purchased on 9/30/21 at Mathewson’s Testimonial Day Benefit; a couple of Babe Ruth single signed balls, a Mathewson/Chief Meyers dual signed ball; the second installment of the “We Are The Champions” section featuring team-signed baseballs from a number of World Series Champions from 1960-1979, including a terrific 1961 Yankee ball with no clubhouse signatures (the earlier years, going back to 1921, will follow in subsequent auctions); a beautiful Ruth signed George Burke photograph; a neat 1939 Yankees team-signed mini bat with Lou Gehrig; a stunning George Wright original oil painting signed by 500 homerun hitters; and loads more.
Staying in the memorabilia category, we are pleased to offer a number of neat mementos including Wayne Krenchicki’s 1979 Orioles AL Champions ring and his medals from the 1973 Amateur World Series and 1975 Pan Am Games; the rare opportunity to purchase a complete run of Brown Hall of Fame bats, with rights to all future offerings; a number of rare and attractive Type 1 original photographs and negatives with subjects including Ruth, Gehrig, Teddy Ballgame, Shoeless Joe, Walter Johnson and many more; and a variety of vintage publications and tickets from the turn-of-the-century to modern day including a tough 1912 World Series ticket stub from Game 6; and lots more.
Our game-used section in this auction includes some great pieces. Leading off is the aforementioned football from the 1958 Championship game; also, an unbelievable 1947 Ted Williams game used Louisville Slugger bat, cut in half and signed by the team; a neat 1955 Roy McMillan Reds flannel; game used and signed cleats from Ripken, Chipper and Jeter; the earliest known Brooks Robinson game used hat, from his 1956 San Antonio Missions minor league season; plus a number of other game-used bats, jerseys, jackets, hats, shoes, equipment and plenty more.
